Where do most travellers pick up rental cars in Turkey?

The main car rental hubs in Turkey where travellers choose to pickup the vehicle are Istanbul, followed by Antalya, Muğla, and Izmir. Offering renters convenience and better vehicle availability, airport car rentals (65-75%) are the primary vehicle collection points, followed by city center and hotels/others.

Which car models are the most booked in Turkey?

Economy and locally manufactured models like the Fiat Egea and Renault Clio dominate car rentals in Turkey due to lower prices and high availability.

How far in advance should you book a car hire in Turkey?

Booking 4–5 weeks in advance is the sweet spot for car rentals, offering the best balance of price and availability. Prices often rise sharply in the final week before pickup, which makes planning ahead and booking early the best option, enabling savings upto 30–50%. more

Which suppliers offer cheapest car hire prices in Turkey?

Important Tips for Foreigners Renting a Car in Turkey

  • HGS toll Explained:

Hired vehicles are pre installed with an HGS electronic tag for easy payments, but billing rules might differ by supplier. While some might charge for tolls after vehicle return, others bill your card days or weeks after. It is crucial to ask at pick-up how toll charges appear, and when my credit card will be charged. Toll surprise bills that arrive weeks later are a pain point for many unsuspecting visitors.

  • Fuel Stations in Turkey:

Turkish fuel stations are fully service based, meaning an attendant will pump gas for you, and you won’t have to worry about getting out of the rented car. You will simply have to specify the fuel type to the attendant. ‘Benzin’ is petrol, ‘Dizel’ or ‘Mazot’ is diesel. Fuel efficiency, especially for long, uninterrupted drives (Turkish Riviera, Göreme circuit, Black Sea Coastal Route), directly impacts total trip cost. Opting for a diesel car over a petrol one can make a real difference to your budget, as diesel is cheaper per km.

  • Handling Traffic Fines:

Traffic laws are strictly enforced in Turkey via police patrolling and automated cameras. In case of violations, fines are issued directly by officers or automatically linked to the car’s license plate. If your rental vehicle receives a fine, the supplier will most likely pay the fine or register it under your name and charge your credit card with the fine amount plus an admin/processing fee (TRY 528 – 2637). What no one might tell you is that paying any Turkish traffic fine within 15 days earns a 25% discount. So, to save yourself from administrative fee scams, ask your rental company how to access fines online to pay promptly.

  • Cross-Border Restrictions:

Turkish car rental companies generally prohibit cross-border travel due to insurance and customs regulations. This means rental cars are not permitted to be taken into neighbouring countries such as Greece, Bulgaria, Georgia, or Cyprus. Cross bordering in a rented car without authorization from supplier can invalidate your insurance and result in heavy penalties. For crossing international borders, the best option would be to switch to regional transportation such as buses, trains, or flights.

  • Parking Navigation:

While a high anxiety topic for tourists, parking in Turkey is manageable. For public street parking color coded system is followed, where white lines indicate free or time-limited parking, while yellow kerb markings signal no stopping or parking. Paid parking is available via Street parking meters, municipal parking zones, and private parking lots (Otopark), and payments for these are normally handled in cash. An easier way of avoiding parking stress is to utilise hotel parking options. Our top tips would be to ask a local before parking if unsure, take a picture of where you parked, and utilise apps like Parkist, Parkera, Parkyeri, and Tabin to check real-time parking availability and combine them with Google Maps, Organic Maps and Yandex apps for easy navigation.

  • Road Rules & Etiquette:

While Turkey’s road infrastructure is excellent, the local driving style can feel a little chaotic and aggressive to tourists. Driving in Turkey is not unsafe but rather requires confidence and quick thinking. Expect minimal usage of indicators, sudden lane changes, overtaking (especially in riskier spots), and constant honking (which is mostly done for communication) by locals. Driving defensively and not aggressively is the ultimate trick in adapting to local driving culture.

  • Best Tech Setup Options:

Having a reliable network setup when travelling to Turkey as a foreigner is advisable. E-SIMs and local SIMs are great options for a stable connection abroad. Between the two, e-SIMs are the better choice owing to their affordability and convenience. The best eSIM providers in Turkey are Airalo, Saily, Holafly, Nomad and Maya Mobile, with plans starting from as low as TRY 180 (5 GB of data for 5 days). A pro tip would be to activate eSIM before arriving in the country (don’t wait until the airport) and to top up in Turkey when needed.

  • Insurance Coverage – Expectation vs Reality:

While the majority of Turkey car rental deals include basic CDW, it doesn’t automatically mean full coverage. Especially if you’re planning to travel on mountain roads and rough terrain, accidental damage to tyres, windscreen chips, or undercarriage damage is not covered by CDW alone. Upgrading to full coverage (zero excess) or Super CDW is strongly advised to cover these unexpected damages and reduce your liability to zero.

All very good

I've always had good experiences booking through this website. It shows you different prices according to different suppliers (both international and local) and insurance options, but in the end you book directly with the supplier, making it more reliable and legit..! (Plus, their prices are live and are constantly updated).

Reliable Service

Everything worked fine, no hidden fees. I read about a lot of shady car rental businesses in Turkey, but this one seems to be operating according to the agreed terms. At least for us there were no expensive surprises before, during or after rental. Turkey is in general not a cheap vacation destination, but we found the lowest possible prices for rental cars when booking through this website.

Happy customer

I booked an epic but affordable car hire in Keçiören Ankara. It was considerably cheaper than booking with any other website. Would obviously prefer them but the supplier gave me a different model than one specified in booking (although the same car category). It was great having everything in one place throughout the trip and although i initially found the terms and conditions a little confusing, it eventually made complete sense. The trip was amazing & all went well and they made it easier without a doubt.

Frequently Asked Questions

International renters who hold a valid driver's license, a passport, and a credit card can rent a car in Turkey. However, for those whose driving license is issued in a non-Latin alphabet, an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a certified translation of the driving license will be required for car hire. It is recommended that you verify the required documentation of the rental company you are considering before booking by carefully reviewing the terms and conditions.

Carrying Third-Party Liability insurance is a legal requirement for all vehicles on Turkish roads. This insurance type is included in the base rental price and covers damages you may cause to other vehicles, property, or individuals in an accident. Other options, like collision damage waiver and theft waiver, are also included in the final rate. You can always purchase additional insurance packages when booking with us for extra peace of mind.

Yes, extending the duration of your car hire period is possible. For ongoing rentals where the hired vehicle has been picked up, you can contact the supplier directly or contact the number provided in the agreement to extend the rental. The extension can be made only at the supplier’s discretion and subject to the availability of the vehicle.

Most car rental companies require you to return the vehicle to the same location where you picked it up. However, some companies may allow you to drop off the car at a different location, often for an additional fee. You can choose to return the hired vehicle to a location other than the pick-up by booking a one way car rental through us.

The time required for deposit returns can vary depending on the payment method and the bank involved. Credit card deposits are usually released faster because they are blocked funds that are removed after the rental company approves the return. In many cases, renters receive their deposit within five to fourteen working days. On the rare chance that the deposit return has taken a significant amount of time, you can contact your bank about any discrepancy.

The majority of car hire companies in Turkey accept debit and credit cards for payment at the rental desk during vehicle collection. However, for blocking the security deposit, presenting a credit card in the main driver’s name is mandatory. This deposit is determined by the supplier considering the applicable excess amount and the selected car category . The amount of the security deposit for the rented vehicle is listed in the Rental Terms section under the heading ‘Security Deposit’ and on the voucher

All major highways and toll roads in Turkey use the HGS system (a sticker for automatic toll payments) for toll charges. Almost all rental cars are equipped with the HGS device, allowing for automatic toll payments. During vehicle collection, ensure that you confirm all details regarding the toll device from the representative at the rental desk.

Most car rental companies in Turkey require atleast 1 year of driving experience; however, a few providers might permit hiring with less than one year of experience in Turkey, although with higher cost, higher risk, and limited protection. If unable to find what you’re looking for, contact our support team for quick resolution.

The young driver fee for hiring a car typically ranges between TRY 523 per day to TRY 1046 per day. This amount differs based on your chosen car rental company, vehicle type, and rental duration. It is worth researching multiple companies at once to select the most suitable option. The fee is calculated on a per-day basis and is added to the final rental prices automatically.

Although the answer depends on how and where you plan to drive in Turkey in a rented car, usually compact or automatic sedans work best for coastal roads and SUV or crossover (Dacia Duster, Nissan Qashqai) are most suited for mountain and inland Regions (Cappadocia, Eastern Turkey). It’s best to research in advance and choose the vehicle category based on your specific location in the country, as it’s ideal to match the terrain to avoid stress, extra fuel costs, and driving fatigue.
